Dev offers independent consulting services to clients on projects that encompass a broad set of business engagements including qualitative research/industry expert interviews, market entry strategy, business intelligence, opportunity assessment, and competitive landscape assessment. We spoke to Dev about overcoming challenges involved in turning freelance, his recent success in creating a market entry strategy for a US tech company, and even fitting in squash tournaments in his spare time!
Q. When you’re at a networking event, how do you describe your independent career status, and where you focus your work?
I introduce myself as an independent consultant that collaborates with teams and clients worldwide across industries using Talent platforms such as Talmix on research and consulting projects.
Q. What are the specific benefits that you, as an independent, offer your clients? How do you explain the value your expertise brings?
As a reliable, persevering and experienced market research consultant, I have the necessary knowledge, skills and attitude to deliver high quality, accurate and actionable insights in a timely manner. My expertise brings value by helping clients make informed business decisions, and effectively addressing their specific challenges.
Q. Why do you think there is increasing demand for independent expertise?
Independent consultants are able to provide solutions in specific niches and offer fresh perspectives that may not be available in-house and would be costly to hire on a full-time basis. Independent consultants can often deliver results more quickly and cost-effectively than traditional consulting firms.
Q. Describe a recent or successful assignment in terms of scope, duration and any particular milestones in the results.
One of the things I enjoy about my work is the breadth of projects I get to consistently work on, with assignments typically lasting between 3-6 weeks. One such assignment was creating a market entry strategy for an American technology company specializing in processing distilled spirits, which included assessing the regulatory & competitive landscape and different go to market structures.
Q. What's your favourite thing to do when you're not on the clock?
I love playing Squash, and the process of trying to get better at it. As an independent consultant, I appreciate the flexibility to travel and try to fit in squash tournaments in different cities, while also working remotely.
Q. What is the biggest challenge you had to face in your career so far and how did you overcome it?
I started freelancing in 2011 and the biggest challenge at that time was ignoring the external noise and pressures to follow a conventional path. However, I felt that remote/independent working was the right fit for me and that it would grow tremendously over the long-term. I kept at it, looking for and working on opportunities, no matter how small, gaining experience and improving my craft in the process.
