I started my career in an investment bank in the corporate finance team, with 40 males and only 1 female. I had to box my way up, depending a lot on intrinsic motivation and honoring my authenticity to survive over 15 years of professional experience in private equity and corporate finance.
Women continue to be outsiders in decision-making with regards to direct investments. There are very few women from my cohort that have remained in the industry. I love my work and my clients, analyzing, building and investing in lucrative businesses - that is what kept me motivated to stay, continue to grow and become better.
I believe it is important to create a culture of diversity, diversity in character, diversity in opinions, respect for others, building teams that complement each other, not fight each other for being different. I think this is more important than singling out female vs male. Once we are accustomed to learning to cope with difference in being, we will be able to extract the most value, and gender equality will be less of a theme.
