The Chief Digital Officer is a recent arrival to the C-suite. The role has developed as a result of needing an owner for digital transformation, and the continued convergence of the marketing and technology functions. In some organisations, the CDO has already been re-defined to be responsible for data strategy, as insights and analysis drive all digital activities. And research firms suggest that this new kid on the block may quite quickly be subsumed into a broader CIO role.
A CDO will come from a background in either digital marketing and strategy, or technology. In particular they should have skills in executing and delivery as well as in planning. This is critical as the reason many digital transformation projects are not successful is because of the final roll-out and acceptance at all points of the business, internally and externally.

Introduction of new technologies, and strategic experience in evaluating latest trends like AI. Regardless of the business type, the CDO needs to have the mindset that every business is a software business.
- Change Management - how to prepare a business for a digital implementation and how to handle the transition of all teams
- Digital Marketing Channels - how to maximise brand activation with all audiences; measurement of returns on different channels, and introduction of techniques to maximise conversion and transactions
- Data and Analytics - underpinning every interaction is measurement and a CDO needs to have created a data model to support the insights required for business growth, including building successful insights team.
- e-commerce - the core digital experience for most businesses as they aim to increase their markets
- Define and execute digital vision and strategy for all customer touchpoints
- Run transformation programmes and develop new approaches when the initial transformation is complete, evaluating and implementing new technologies
- Generate revenue and grow brand penetration through digital channels
- Manage interactions between marketing, technology, product teams to create the digital blueprint
- Lead digital teams globally, including customer experience, data and insights, digital marketing functions
- Execute a results-driven approach and go beyond 'forever in beta' mindset
- Lead the business through the impact of digital change, taking on board cultural sensitivities for the non-digital natives
- Report progress to board level
Interim CDO rates
The rates for interim CDOs reflect their seniority and execution experience. This is key for an interim: while many executives will be looking to make the move into this role, for an interim, it is vital that they have already executed digital transformation and are particularly focused on the potential of data and the transition to a broader CIO role.
Day rates for interim consultants with this background will range from £950 - £2750 per day.
