“Like many, I spent the first half of my career within the corporate world – starting out as a mechanical engineer with Caterpillar and then moving towards the IT and Tech functions within IT,” he tells me. Harry’s expertise eventually saw him take up the roles of CTO and COO for various organisations. He’s run several medium-sized businesses and understands the challenges faced by organisations in this changing economy, but it was when Harry moved towards an independent career that his knowledge of transformation and change management became a sought-after commodity.

A rugby scrum of transformation success
“Change management programs are generally 80% generic and 20% specific – meaning that regardless of the industry type, market segment or vertical, the remit of the consultant employed to deliver change and facilitate transformation, for the most part, usually stays the same. The 20% deviation relates to developing an understanding of business language, product detail and technology. Fundamentally, though, change management is all about building trust with those involved and taking their hearts and minds along the change journey with you”, says Harry.
And he knows. In Harry’s spare time, he referees local rugby matches and he shares with me the direct correlations he finds between change programs in business culture and his life as a referee. “A game of rugby is 80 minutes of orchestrated conflict. When you look at the game, as a referee, the correlation between the pace, orchestrated strategy and delivery is very similar to a typical transformation program in the business world: As the referee, your decision-making process is similar, the need to act quickly is the same and the intensity of an often volatile situation can often appear exactly as the passage any business and its internal functions go through within a change management program. As the referee (or independent consultant) you have to read the game. Some people try to dictate every move, but it’s not always possible. Sometimes it’s up to you to create the structure and momentum in order to get the best situation out of the game”, he says.

By and large, most organisations who need Harry’s help recognise that they have a business need, but don’t know how to solve it. And because it’s so big, it can quickly become completely overwhelming.
