Knowing when it’s time to augment your workforce

We all know what the pinch feels like. Doing more, with less - producing more output but with the same, and sometimes limited, resource and expertise. And it’s no wonder that the resulting change in the way that we work is being driven by the desire to do more, in a new way, yielding better and quicker results. Introduce a new way of thinking about talent – existing, or otherwise. And before you think that this changing world of work means a complete overhaul and re-establishment of your workforce, stop. It doesn’t need to be. Here are a few ways to recognise when it’s time to augment, amplify and enhance through a new independent talent available to you right now – enabling you to deliver more, better, quicker.

When you need it now, but not tomorrow

Finding interim expertise who can satisfy a particular, and pressing, business need right now, has always been one of the biggest business challenges any talent manager has had to face. You know you need someone to deliver a specific project right now. You know that you probably won’t need them on a permanent basis, but you face a critical challenge to deliver an outcome right now – and you have no idea where to find the skill you need, without the burden of a permanent placement. That’s where an independent talent force comes in. You hire the skill that you need, when you need it, for only the duration that you need it for.  You get what you want, on-demand.  And when all is delivered, and the project is done, business reverts back to normal and you start to focus on the next project.  That is the true opportunity of changing the way you work towards a more purpose-driven, fluid working model.

When you want more of the same

You may be sitting there thinking that you have the best of the best, already. That’s great. But how do you get more of them? The A-Team is great, but even the A-Team had their challenges and limitations. So how do you ramp up your A-Team to deliver more of the same, consistent quality of output that you’ve worked hard to achieve? It’s simple. You find independent workers who have the same experience, niche ability, expertise and most of all, work-ethic, who are not only able to jump in and swim alongside your existing team, but more importantly, enable you and your team to be even more effective at your core project focusses, while they execute the peripheral project deliverables, and, together with your core team, deliver a results-achieving project.

When you need to stretch, but only when necessary

Becoming a more agile, fluid organisation is probably one of the top items on your company’s agenda for this year. And when the focus is on delivering more, in new ways, it may mean that your resources may be required to stretch and be stretched more than you were prepared for. But it delivering more doesn’t always mean bulking up the pantry cupboard with resource that may become useful on a rainy day.  Being agile merely means being willing to move and flow according to your organisation’s, and its market’s, needs. Adopting a new mind set towards the way that you use talent is a first giant leap towards business agility – and accepting that an on-demand, contingent talent pool enables you to stretch when you need to, without any additional and unnecessary organisational bulk.

When the deadline’s already passed

For many, a passed, unsuccessful deadline may feel like project failure – but it doesn’t need to be. The pressure is on when the focus moves from missing a deadline, to reeling that project back in line in order to mitigate future project risk, and still deliver an expected, and successful outcome. That’s when the need for even more hands-on-deck becomes prevalent. But what do you do when the hands you need are nowhere to be found? You approach an independent talent pool who understand the pressures of project delivery, who specialise in project turnaround and who are able to pick up the reigns and help you to charter the route back towards project delivery.

When the budget’s blown

That may seem like an oxymoron in principle. Without budget, how are you able to maximise resource any more. Surely the project is doomed for non-delivery? Wrong. Chances are, if your team is tracking a project budget closely, there will be signs along the way giving you warning whether a project is forecast to go over budget. And hopefully, before you’ve started your project, you’ve built in a contingency budget as a fail-safe option. So, you may now find yourself at the intersection of project spend with a huge challenge of deliverables still to achieve. So how do you achieve them when you know you have a finite amount of resource and budget available to you, to still deliver the same outcome and quality that you, and your key stakeholders, expect?  Easy – you take advantage of an on-demand, highly skilled, independent workforce who can work to a strict budget, who understands constraints of resource availability and who is able to step in and help you manage your way through towards delivery, with an identified, finite budget that you have left in your contingent project fund.
