Background & Objectives
Our client, Founded in 1815 in Oxford and latterly it has gained an enviable reputation for refurbishing listed buildings since it has retained many of the required crafts and skills in house and in more recent years as listed building projects have become tender driven, has concentrated on the high end residential market both in the Cotswolds and London. Typically its clients are now HNWIs, frequently of foreign origin.Although the market is growing and reasonably lucrative both the clients and the workload are volatile and difficult to the extent that managing clients expectations and whims is very challenging and actually getting paid for completed work the more s• In an effort to reduce our dependence on this type of work and to broaden the base of our activities they want to conduct a study of the various building and building services they might develop by acquisition, joint venture or partnership to add to our capability• They would hope to include them not only in our typical projects but also to offer them separately o For example they have acquired a small prestigious audio visual company where they can build state of the art communications into our building projects and offer them separately as a stand alone or sub contracted piece of work. It has been, in a modest way, quite successful so far• The question is what else could they do?
The Client is looking for someone who knows the industry and can either readily provide or would be able to prepare views on the following:o The different markets that could be served and their relative sizes and growth rateso Barriers to entry in these markets and mapping of these onto our existing capabilitieso Competitive context (current market and other markets)o Overview of what others have done well, badly, and lessons learnedo Evaluation of the different models that could be deployedo View of possible partners or acquisition targets Location will be Oxford most probably.
