Objectives and Key Deliverables
We are an advisory firm that tackles the world's most pressing challenges, often by using private sector type approaches to identify ways that will really drive change, on a big scale, and for the long term.
Our client is a new and large scale institutional investor, known for also taking an interest in developing and emerging markets where it's patient capital and activist approach can deliver great returns over the long run.
They are considering expanding their portfolio to include agribusiness, and in particular are excited about opportunities in fertiliser, primary production for plantation crops and livestock, agroprocessing, and agro-allied infrastructure. Given their desire to look at robust underlying macro growth potential, they are looking at markets in Latin America, C&E Europe, Africa, Australia and possible S&SE Asia.
They have done a lot of groundwork internally and are now looking for some support to rapidly bring this together in a coherent, and pressure-tested, investment thesis over the course of 2 weeks.
This project is at pitch stage but should all move ahead as expected will kick-off on the 2nd of April (Sunday for UAE working week). The project will run over two weeks with work also expected on the middle weekend. A shortlist will be made on the 14th with the successful candidate notified on the 24th.
All expenses will be covered but we expect the successful candidate to ensure they are available to work in the UAE on the 2nd (Visa / work permit procurement).
The client is looking for a powerpoint presentation that synthesizes their work so far, and also fills in any key gaps that emerge, and that relates a coherent overall investment thesis for the agribusiness markets that they are targeting. We expect that this may be c.100 slides+
You will be working as part of a team of 5 consultants and 2 partners to deliver this. Experience working in a top-tier strategy firm will be essential, as the team will be composed of consultants - both on Dalberg's and the client side - from this background.
This is potentially an incredibly impactful project in the agribusiness space; earlier work by Dalberg last year identified that $400bn would be required to transform African agriculture in just 12 value chains into commercially thriving sectors; this client could be a leader in supplying the scale of capital that shows serious intent, and demonstrates that returns over the long run can be realised.
- Strategy consulting background from top-tier firm (e.g. MBB, L.E.K., OC&C)
- Experience in agribusiness strategy; especially ideal if you have experience in at least 3 of the following:
a) commercial plantation crops - esp cocoa, coffee, palm oil, rubber, avocado - primary production and, where relevant the remaining stages in the value chain
b) livestock - beef (though not dairy), poultry - production and downstream activities
c) aquculture - primary production and downstream activities
d) fertiliser (nitrogen, not potash)
e) agro-allied infrastructure: logistics (incl warehousing / storage), transportation; not necessarily ports as this is already covered in the client's other sectors
Experience managing modules of large projects or running small projects.
Experience working with institutional investors or private equity firms on developing investment strategies is essential.
