We are seeking high-performing individual to join our firm for 6 months to help with an ongoing project.

The responsibilities and duties of the Head of Strategic Development are to lead and manage a rolling program of strategic investigation, decision and in some cases delivery/change projects. Effectively, head of an internal Strategic Consultancy team for the Client organisation. The Head of Strategic Development also plays an overall Program Management role for the Client organisation on related company wide projects.

- As a member of the Senior Leadership team (SLT), be a champion for identifying new areas of significant opportunity and threat in ‘horizon 2’ and ‘horizon 3’ timeframes, for guiding Management Team (MT) on awareness of these and undertaking investigations leading to company (usually Board) decisions on selected items with cross-Division scope.
- Lead the collaborations for creation of strategic business development plans for Client organisation which do not lie within the scope of any one group or where higher level assessment is called for the CEO. Areas might cover any part of Client organisation’s business or adjacent business areas.
- Represent Client organisation publicly in areas relating to the evolution of the industry, the impact of telecommunications on other industries, and (with other stakeholders) major regulatory directions with strategic impact on Client.
- With regard to Client organisation’s overall strategy
• Identify and call attention to areas not otherwise being given sufficient consideration in the formulation of Client organisation’s strategy
• Develop and formulate long range and annual strategies for selected topics / domains as requested by the Client organisation’s leadership team. Secure Management Team (MT) approval and in some cases Board approval for these strategies.
• Support Client organisation in review and contribution to the annual business plan (RP) and longer term plan (LRP) as they are formulated and updated each year.
- With regard to Execution of Initiatives and Operation of solutions
• Oversee the execution of selected strategic initiatives, and provide a central PMO function for all initiatives led by the relevant team. Review and monitor performance on key parameters and with the relevant SLT leader for each initiative develop course correction plans as necessary.
• Manage centrally a small team of business, technology strategy and regulatory strategy specialists and engagement of external strategic consultants for specific capabilities.
• Personally sponsor and drive the delivery of selected Strategic Development initiatives
• Lead and maintain relationships with industry partners relating to the evolution of the telecommunications industry, adjacent industries, client industries and the leading edge of technologies which enable these.
- The Head of Strategic Development will operate as the leader of a small, highly skilled Internal Consultancy practice of the Client organisation, and will collaborate widely across the company on a project basis. Their most frequent collaborations will be with the Technology, Corporate Affairs / Regulatory and Finance / Strategy teams. They directly lead and line manage a team of 6-10 staff plus specialist contractors as required by the program of work.

- Education - Bachelors Degree in a relevant field eg. Engineering or Business. Preferable also an MBA or similar advanced qualification in a field related to business strategy
- Work experience - At least 15 years with a substantial and recent part of that in a Strategic Consultancy role (mostly likely with a globally recognised consultancy practice) and/or the Strategy department for a major corporation. A substantial part of their career in a Telecommunications-related industry (including e-Commerce and/or Banking). Should demonstrate line-leadership experience and significant cross-functional virtual-team leadership experience, and ideally would have held direct P&L accountability at some stage
- Skills/knowledge - A majority of :
• Business development and new product development
• Telecommunications technology (strategic, development and optionally also operations)
• Corporate cost reduction programmes
• Telecommunications spectrum planning and valuation
• Financial modelling of major investment and change programs; enterprise value / economic value modelling
• Regulatory strategy and comparative regulatory approaches in telecommunication internationally
• Strategy and breakthrough formulation processes & facilitation
• Intra-company networking and building consensus on change programs
• Good communication skills in English both written and oral.
• Personal traits: Positive, Passionate, Collaborative. A self-starter, able and motivated to both perform and lead under pressure in a challenging environment.
