Project Brief
For this project in Nigeria, our client has identified gaps in financing for farms and agribusiness in rural areas in Africa. This is caused by, on the demand side, a lack of market orientation and access to financial services, resulting in insufficient investments in agricultural production, processing and marketing. On the supply side, financial institutions lack knowledge and expertise to provide tailored financial services to the unique business models of rural farmers and agribusiness.

We have been tasked to analyse sustainable agricultural business models within the rice, maize, cassava and potato value chains in Nigeria, with the aim of opening up access to finance agribusinesses in need of financial services. We will be drawing from the client’s material and calculations previously developed in regional and bilateral partnership projects in Nigeria.

We are seeking a project lead with part-time availability from September 2018 to March 2019 in Nigeria.
Role Description: The project lead will be responsible for leading, coordinating, and executing the client’s mission in collaboration with a 4-person team.
• Master’s degree in Agricultural Economics, MBA or similar;
• Minimum 7 years professional experience in value chains, sub sector analysis,
good understanding of private sector and trade policies;
• Experience with value chain analysis in Africa, Nigeria an advantage; previously
conducted value chain analyses as lead consultant/researcher;
• Excellent analytical skills, including sound understanding of agricultural cash
flows, IRR and net present value calculations of agricultural entities, etc.;
• Extensive knowledge in rural and microfinance with a focus on agricultural finance and cooperative banking, preferably in Sub-Saharan Africa (Nigeria is an
• Proven record of working with international development
agencies/international programmes and project development experience;
• Work experience in Sub-Saharan Africa, preferably in rural areas with a strong
focus on value chain development / agribusiness (Nigeria is an advantage);
• Strong coordination/organization/networking skills and experience in
coordinating expert teams;
• Strong conceptual, socio-cultural and personal skills;
• High level of adaptability as project evolves;
• Readiness to work part-time remotely and in Nigeria for a duration of 7 months;
• Full proficiency in English, knowledge of at least 2 Nigerian local languages a
