Objectives and Key Deliverables

Our client would like to understand operating models in department stores’ fashion departments. Specifically, they would like information on the following:
• Buying process of different brands in different department stores in the UK, US & Europe (with the major focus on US & UK)
• How the operating model (i.e. wholesale, concession, sale or return) varies by brand and by channel
o Advantages, disadvantages and specific pain points
o Variation on profit margins
o Key operating implications of model (e.g. stock ownership, staffing etc.)
o Historical evolution of the split of different operating models
• Preference of fashion brands to different operating models

Debenham's - U.K
Selfridges - U.K
Harvey Nichols - U.K
Nordstrom - U.S
Saks Fifth Ave - U.S
Galerias Lafayette - France
Bloomingdale's - U.S
Macy's - U.S

You must be able to answer the following:
• Are you, or have you recently been, directly responsible for purchasing leading fashion brands for a department store retailer?
• Can you speak at length about operating models within the fashion industry (wholesale, concession and sale or return), associated value chains and the pros and cons of each?

Please provide an hourly rate when you apply for the project, as the engagement will likely be less than one day.

Expert Insight into the above objectives

• Substantial experience working in department store retailing (>10 years)
• Employee that is currently a buyer of major fashion brands and has knowledge of the supply chain and different operating models. Former employees of these companies will be considered if their relevant experience is less than 2 years old
• Experience in a number of different department store retailers (a nice to have, not critical)
