Objectives and Key Deliverables
Our portfolio company is a premier software provider of intelligent procedure documentation and coding solutions improving clinical productivity and reimbursement, equipping physicians and administrators with evidence-based clinical decision support solutions to optimize order sets and care plans and providing evidence-based content for structured clinical documentation and coding embedded within the EHR. They are trusted by leading physicians globally, serving approximately 1,500 hospitals and 1,000 Ambulatory Surgery Centers (ASCs), including 16 of the top 20 U.S. hospitals for gastroenterology (GI) and GI surgery. They are headquartered in Minneapolis, MN.
In order to ensure that the company fully realizes its enormous potential, the Company has committed to attracting an outstanding CTO. The CTO will report to the Chief Executive Officer, and will be tasked with developing and expanding the Company’s service offerings and leading the Company’s technological conversion from its current on-premise software to a cloud-based platform. The desired candidate will have the past experience to execute the Company’s strategic product and services vision, as well as the leadership and force of will to effectively focus and marshal the Company’s engineering and software development resources in successfully achieving these plans.
The CTO will be expected to:
Immerse him/herself in the opportunity, including conduct a thorough audit of the Company’s existing technology and development team, resources, assets, and issues to optimize their relevance and fit with the strategic plan to be set in place.
After absorbing all aspects of the business's, technology, and marketplace, the CTO will be expected to translate this vision into a realistic and achievable cascade of implied action items: strategic, tactical and procedural. A critical aspect will be the need to maintain existing systems, but at the same time, innovate by shaping a strategic technology plan which optimizes a variety of technology assets at the Company’s disposal both in-house and through its partners.
Establish the leadership, direction, and key initiatives which will further strengthen the company's position as the leader in its target market. He/she will enhance and accelerate the momentum of their engineering and development process, and in so doing assert its pre-eminent technology/product position with a variety of key constituencies, including its customers (existing/prospective), strategic partners, and with the company’s employee base.
Lead the architecture design in the business's transformation from an on-promise product to a best-in-class cloud-based product offering over the next 12-24 months. Work closely with Product Management to implement the product roadmap, development, quality and product launch/delivery processes. He/she will bring a keen understanding of automated production systems and a dedicated focus to increasing automation and self-service tools for internal and external users.
Lead the engineering team and establish best practice engineering standards and processes while defining the technology stack and architecture for their next gen products (EHR, Billing, Remote, analytics). A desire to explore new technical avenues for development and growth (i.e., Azure, Open Source, etc.).
He/she will create a relentless culture of quality, as well as world-class quality assurance processes, and establish reportable metrics for all areas of performance and quality, including turn-around time, volume, customer satisfaction, and stress testing.
Serve as the leader and liaison between executive management and engineers. Collaborate with the Leadership Team to develop and maintain a technology vision that supports organizational needs and broader business goals. Be a nexus for technology-related issues and key strategic discussions where product development and product management are concerned. He/she will be required to interpret customer and product needs and engineering ability to optimize company development and output. Should have, or quickly develop within herself/himself and the team, deep institutional knowledge of the wide variety of healthcare standards, both existing and emerging, and successfully evolve the Company’s architecture, products and technology partnerships accordingly and in a forward-thinking manner.
Manage the financial performance of engineering, evaluate current team capabilities, including planning, budgeting, capital equipment, contractual and human resource requirements. He/she will work closely with finance to develop ROI justification for major initiatives, ensuring that projects are completed on time and stay within budget.
Enable workforce productivity and customer satisfaction through efficient use of resources. Assess talent and re-allocate responsibilities according to strengths.
He/she should have world-class technology credentials and the stature to lead and command respect from an extraordinary team of investors, management colleagues and strategic partners.
A minimum of 15 years of technical leadership where he/she has demonstrated a track record of success in conducting and leading sophisticated engineering and product development initiatives and operations. Ideally, the finalist will bring relevant cloud/SaaS, data/analytics knowledge, and related technology experiences.
Brings a balanced combination of both small, entrepreneurial and larger company background. Has successfully scaled and supported an enterprise class and SaaS/cloud solutions. Specifically, the CTO must bring a familiarity and comfort level with transforming a legacy product offering into a technology-forward, development environment. He/she should have experience working earlier in their career growing from a client-server, enterprise-wide applications to more distributed systems/SaaS and data warehousing/analytics/predictive modeling solutions.
Brings process expertise required to scale an organization and manage deliverables on time and at budget- has the technical depth to steer clear of “potholes”. Can evaluate/has history of evaluating and implementing use of off-shoring or multi-site approaches to engineering and/or QA work if and when needed.
Having an in-depth understanding of customer issues and how to solve them will be critical to building a culture that is laser focused on customers, both internal and external. By doing so, has a proven ability to establish and maintain effective, respectful and trusting relationships with clients, consumers and colleagues representing varying needs, personalities and styles.

An undergraduate degree in a relevant technical discipline such as Electrical Engineering or Computer Science (or equivalent) from a leading academic institution is required. An advanced degree is desired

We are looking for someone who can be based in Minneapolis for 5 days a week. Compensation is to be discussed and will consist of base, bonus and, for the right candidate, equity. A passion for healthcare is a must!
